San Francisco police make 40 arrests after Giants' World Series win

Oct. 30--Police arrested 40 people in San Francisco on Wednesday night after celebrations over the Giants' World Series-clinching victory turned violent, sending six people, including three officers, to local hospitals.

The Giants' win in Kansas City stirred up overjoyed fans -- some of whom police said threw bottles at officers and vandalized nine patrol cars. Besides the three officers who received hospital treatment, several others suffered minor injuries during the attack.

San Francisco police Chief Gregory Suhr announced the arrest and injury tallies at a news conference, saying the aftermath was "disgraceful."

"It just makes us look bad," he said.

Two men were hurt by gunfire in separate shootings. One was shot in the arm while he was walking past two people who were arguing, Sgt. Monica Macdonald said.

A third man was stabbed three times during a separate argument.

Most of the arrests, Macdonald said, were for public intoxication.

Fans poured into the streets after the Giants' win, starting bonfires at King and 2nd streets and Mission and 19th streets.

Most of the flames were extinguished by firefighters and police officers.

San Francisco's Municipal Transportation Agency had to suspend service due to safety concerns after some revelers began jumping on buses.

Police plan to increase the number of officers on the street Friday when a parade is scheduled to celebrate the Giants' victory.
