San Francisco 49ers sign QB Josh Rosen from Bucs practice squad

The San Francisco 49ers have signed quarterback Josh Rosen from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. It’s unclear whether he will only serve as the team’s backup or if he will have a chance to earn playing time over C.J. Beathard.

The 49ers have been playing without starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for much of the season. However, backup Nick Mullens suffered a season-ending injury in Sunday’s 41-33 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. After practice squad quarterback Josh Johnson was added to the Reserve/COVID-19 list, Beathard was the lone healthy quarterback on the roster.

Rosen, of course, was the 10th overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2018 NFL Draft, but after an abysmal rookie season was traded to the Miami Dolphins. An underwhelming sophomore campaign led the Dolphins to release the UCLA product prior to this year, when he joined the Bucs practice squad. In 20 career games (16 starts), Rosen has completed just 54.8% of his passes for 2,845 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions.
