The San Francisco 49ers, fresh off an appearance in Super Bowl LIV, have signed head coach Kyle Shanahan to a new six-year contract.
The contract replaces the final three years of his previous deal and will keep him with the team through the 2025 season.
Shanahan took over as the head coach of the 49ers in 2017. He went 10-22 in his first two seasons before the team exploded out of the gate in 2019, beginning the season 8-0 before losing to the Seahawks in overtime in Week 10.
The 49ers finished the regular season 13-3, defeating Seattle in Week 17 before putting away the Vikings and the Packers in the playoffs and losing to the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-20, in Super Bowl LIV.
Shanahan was an offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons before taking over in San Francisco. He has turned San Francisco around with his offensive creativity despite subpar play from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and an underwhelming group of wide receivers.
Tight end George Kittle and fullback Kyle Juszczyk are the stars, as well as the team’s stellar defensive unit. San Francisco will continue to be a thorn in Seattle’s side in the very crowded NFC West for years to come, and as long as Shanahan is at the helm they will be a tough team to beat.
