San Francisco 49ers chief drops Leeds United hint as he discusses World Cup 2026 ambitions

One of the top executives at the San Francisco 49ers has dropped a hint that Leeds United could play a match at the NFL franchise's Levi's Stadium in the future.

Al Guido is the president of the 49ers, who increased their ownership stake at Elland Road to 37 per cent earlier this year, following an initial round of investment in the summer of 2018.

This partnership has been fruitful so far, with Leeds soon hiring Marcelo Bielsa after the two teams linked together, with promotion and an all-action first season back in the Premier League following.

It should probably be little surprise that Leeds United's influence is growing in California, with Guido discussing the team's hope of hosting World Cup matches in the 2026 tournament which is being held in the USA and Canada, while also teasing the prospect of Leeds United turning out in San Francisco in the future.

Speaking on the 49ers Talk podcast, Guido said: "On October 31, we're working with the authorities to make Levi's Stadium a World Cup site in 2026.

"I hope to land at which will see anywhere between four to eight games at the stadium.

"That would be fantastic and we're looking to host international soccer and helps that we're part owner of Leeds United. So, we'll see if we can host a Leeds United game at Levi's Stadium in the near future.

"We definitely want to make that as a destination for a Leeds match and it will really benefit the north of the city."

Given the two flourishing partnership between the two sides and Leeds United's growing appeal stateside, the prospect of a Whites pre-season appearance at the Levi's Stadium is a logical one.
