TEAM NEEDS

Edge Rusher
The trade for Dee Ford didn’t change the fact that the 49ers should aim for an edge rusher early on in the draft. Depth at the position in today’s NFL is key, and the release of Cassius Marsh provides further proof that San Francisco will need to add more players at this spot.
Free Safety
Jaquiski Tartt is slotted at strong safety, and Jimmie Ward was brought back on a one-year deal worth $4.5 million, but Ward can’t stay healthy. San Francisco will need a free safety who can be a difference-maker in coverage as they look to bolster their Cover 3 defense.
Wide Receiver
The 49ers added Jordan Matthews in free agency after the loss of Pierre Garcon. San Francisco does possess decent options in Marquise Goodwin, second-year wideout Dante Pettis with Trent Taylor and Richie James manning the slot. But the team could benefit from another playmaker for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Cornerback
The 49ers signed Jason Verrett to a 1-year deal, but his injury history makes it unlikely that they can count on him as a long-term option. On one side Richard Sherman has a spot locked down, but on the other side, Ahkello Witherspoon struggled in 2018, leaving some concerns.
