SAN DIEGO _ The home of a San Diego woman fatally shot last week on a nearby sidewalk, allegedly by her husband, was targeted by burglars a day after her death, police and family members say.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the burglary.
Fernando Avila, 28, has been charged with gunning down 29-year-old Julia Serrano on Dec. 5, less than two weeks after she filed for divorce. The couple had been married nearly seven years.
The shooting was caught on surveillance video and witnessed by several people, including possibly the couple's two children, police have said.
A relative of the victim called San Diego police Saturday to say that someone had burglarized the family home in the City Heights neighborhood, San Diego police spokesman Billy Hernandez said. "The residence had been vacant since the murder and no one had permission to be inside," he said.
Police arrested two people in connection with the case, a 20-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman. Hernandez said he didn't know how investigators had identified the suspects or what items had been taken from the home.
The victim's sister, Maria Serrano, set up a GoFundMe page asking for donations for the children, who are 7 and 10.
"A day after the slaying, someone broke into her home and stole television sets and electronics belonging to her two children," she wrote on the fundraising site. "Being so close to the holidays, we are asking for donations to provide her children with somewhat of a normal Christmas."
The account sought to raise $1,000 and said any funds exceeding the goal would be put into a savings account for the children. As of midday Thursday, people had donated more than $1,600.
At an arraignment Monday, a prosecutor said the couple was arguing in their home and it spilled out onto the street. Serrano was first shot in the shoulder and then was forced to sit on the curb, where her husband shot her directly in the chest, Deputy District Attorney Karra Reedy said in court.
