Why are the Aztecs starting a search for a new place to play?

San Diego State is window shopping for Plan B.
According to reports by the San Diego Union-Tribune, Athletic Director JD Wicker is looking for a venue in Southern California to host San Diego State Aztecs football for the 2021 season.
Initial search has begun across the county for venues like junior college stadiums, but Wicker has not ruled out playing outside of San Diego County, even the stadium that hosted the Los Angeles Chargers in Carson, California, is on the table.
“We’re going to go out and do our due diligence and see what other facilities are available in Southern California that give us the opportunity to provide a better game-day experience for our football team, our fans,” Wicker said. “We’ll look at the revenue and expense side as well because we are paying so much to be in the building.
“Then, if we are a tenant somewhere else, we know we’re not going to have to worry about what happens if concrete starts falling in a Club area or the video board that is what, 20 or 30 years old, goes out.”
For San Diegans with an interest in football, this news is surprising coming from the local university who has marketed itself as the only football team in town since the Chargers left.
All this posturing, for what? It’s a bunch of politics, but if you are fascinated with this stuff feel free to do the research. The “relocation” rumors are sparking because city leadership has not executed the contract to sell the land over to San Diego State. It’s jeopardizing the University’s timeline of a completed project, and when the Aztecs can break in their new digs.
It’s unfortunate the Aztecs are scrambling in a plan B effort to play in 2021. When Measure G passed in 2018, there was a lot of optimism for San Diego State University. But now, much like the stadium that sits in Mission Valley, this relocation talk has gotten old fast.
