One police officer and died and another is undergoing emergency surgery after being shot in San Diego, California.
The circumstances of the incident at around 11pm local time (7am BST, Friday) was unclear and a search continues for possible suspects.
A spokesperson for the San Diego Police Department said: “It is with a very sad heart that we announce the death of one of our officers. Pray for his family.”
The second officer injured in the incident was undergoing surgery and his condition was unknown.
One suspect has been arrested around an hour later but searches continued for others believed to remain on the run in the Southcrest area.
Eight police officers were murdered in two separate attacks in Dallas and Baton Rouge earlier this month, although the majority of police shootings in the US occur during gun battles with armed suspects.
Tensions remain high in some communities following police killings of several unarmed men.
