SAN DIEGO_Two San Diego police officers shot and killed a 15-year-old boy who police said pointed a handgun at them as he stood in front of Torrey Pines High School early Saturday.
Police received a call at 3:27 a.m. asking for a welfare check on a juvenile at the school, said Lt. Mike Holden of the San Diego Police Department. The caller said there was a kid in front of the school who someone should probably check on, the lieutenant said.
Police believe the caller was the boy himself, Holden said.
The two officers arrived at the school about the same time and saw the boy.. "He pulled out a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers," Holden said.
Both officers fired, striking the boy several times.
The officers immediately began life-saving measures, and the teen boy taken to a hospital in La Jolla, where he was pronounced dead, Holden said.
The boy's name was not released. He lived nearby but it was unknown if he attended the school.
Police Saturday were uncertain whether the gun was real or a replica.
The names of the officers involved are expected to be released in the next few days, per department protocol. One of the officers is on the department's Juvenile Services Team, Holden said.
