Sammy Watkins sets career highs, climbs Chiefs single-game leaderboard

The hype this offseason about Kansas City Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins looking in the best shape of his career appears to have been true.

Watkins reached new career milestones today against the Jacksonville Jaguars, exploding for a monster day. He started off by catching a 68-yard receiving touchdown on the third offensive play of the game but he didn’t stop there. He and Patrick Mahomes continued to combine for some more great plays.

By the end of the day, Watkins had notched 198 total receiving yards and three touchdown catches. Those numbers were both good for new single-game career highs for Watkins. It all came on just nine receptions which shows you how explosive he was after the catch.

Watkins’ performance also got him pretty high up in the Chiefs’ record books. He’s now tied for the second-most receiving touchdowns in a single game in Chiefs history with about five other players. He also is now fifth in franchise history in terms of single-game receiving yards.

The most receiving touchdowns in a game by a Chiefs player was Jamaal Charles in 2013 with 4 against the Oakland Raiders. The most receiving yards in a game by a Chiefs player is Stephone Paige with 309. So he’s up there with a pretty exclusive club.

The Chiefs will need Watkins to continue to perform well as Tyreek Hill suffered a shoulder injury in the first half of the game. Even after Hill left the game, Watkins continued to put up good numbers against a stout Jaguars secondary.
