‘Same old story’ - Sunderland fans share their thoughts after Bristol Rovers draw

Sunderland fans have been reacting to the 1-1 League One opening day draw with Bristol Rovers.

The Black Cats went into the game looking to kick off the season on a positive note as they aim to win promotion back to the Championship.

However, things didn’t start off as they would have hoped when Rovers took the lead in just the third minute.

Goalkeeper Lee Burge conceded a penalty by bringing down Jayden Mitchell-Lawson with just 90 seconds on the clock.

Luke Leahy made no mistake from the spot.

And it took until the 83rd minute for Sunderland to draw level and take something from the game.

It was Chris Maguire who was the hero who put the ball into the bottom left corner from just outside of the area to ensure that Sunderland wouldn’t leave empty-handed.

There was, however, one more twist as George Dobson was shown a straight red card for a challenge deep into stoppage time.

After the full-time whistle, fans took to social media to give their thoughts and reaction.

Here is what they had to say.

Steven Hoey: It's like the season never ended, same old story #safc #league1

Richard: I actually think there were lots of pluses today, but ultimately drawing at home to Bristol Rovers is not good enough. Dobson was poor throughout, Grigg making the runs and not getting the balls. 7 shots on target is better. Improving, but needs to turn to results quickly #SAFC

Mark Addison: After six months since our last league game I’ve just remembered why #SAFC drive me to drink

J. Simpson: Dobson played just as bad as everyone else in the first half but was much improved in the second half, doesn't deserve the stick he's getting at all. Haven't seen a replay of the tackle so don't know if it's a red or not, didn't look like it. #SAFC

Ross: Dominated game just need cutting edge and lack pace but no need for all the panic #safc

SunderlandAFC Info: Can we have another 6 months off please #SAFC

Andyr69: Same as last season, nowhere near good enough. Obvious issues not addressed and we’re told maybe needs one more signing! Striker with pace/ creative midfielder needed minimum. #safc
