'Same old frailties' - Joe Cole's brutal verdict on Arsenal's performance against Crystal Palace

Former West Ham and Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole believes that Arsenal suffered from the 'same old frailties' against Crystal Palace following the 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring in a dominant first-half performance but Jordan Ayew's deflected effort put the scores level in South London.

Arsenal captain Aubameyang was then sent off for a challenge on Max Meyer following a VAR review, which is set to leave the Gunners without their skipper for the next few weeks.

As a result, Cole identified that while Arteta is making improvements at Arsenal, there is still a long way to go and they need to be consistent in both halves.

Jurgen Klopp on thinking about the Invincibles

"It's absolutely a work in progress. Some really good signs in the first half, the first 30 minutes they looked good, they were moving it, they were aggressive," he told BT Sport.

"In the second half, the same old frailties came about and they will have to be ironed out. I think that's a longer process but I think he's had a decent start to his Arsenal career."

Speaking after the game, Arteta admits he was not happy with the way his team dropped off after taking the lead.

"I was pleased with how we started the game," he said on BT Sport.

"After the break we knew they would push and then for the goal we completely switched off and I was very disappointed."

Arteta also addressed the decision to show Aubameyang a straight red card.

“After Auba’s red card we responded even better.

“It looked nasty and Auba didn’t intend to injure him.

"I haven’t seen it but from what I’ve heard, I think it was a harsh challenge, there was no intention but maybe he mistimed it. We’ll see what the decision is."
