Samaritans Ireland say loneliness is a 'growing issue' as Covid-19 forces people apart

The Samaritans say loneliness is a "growing issue" as Covid-19 restrictions force people apart from their friends and family.

Phone calls to the service have been "longer and busier" since the outbreak began.

Ciaran Brennan of Samaritans Ireland told the Irish Mirror that coronavirus and related issues are now coming up in four out of 10 calls made to volunteers.

He said: "While our service is confidential and we are not able to share specifics of call content, we know that in general when people ring Samaritans for emotional support, they often mention several concerns including isolation and loneliness, anxiousness and mental health, family and relationship issues, and financial worries and it is no different in the current crisis which has magnified many of these issues for callers.

"We've only just started tracking Covid-19 as a specific concern but it is referenced on a large number of calls, around four out of 10 calls.

"Coronavirus isn’t necessarily the main feature of most calls, but it’s in the background if not the foreground of quite a lot of calls at the moment."

The Samaritans' support services in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland typically answer around half a million calls every year, or more than 1,000 calls per day.

Due to current restrictions, The Samaritans have had to cease face to face support meetings in their branches and training volunteers.

However, they are still providing phone and email support.

Ciaran added: "It is an anxious time for many. Therefore, Samaritans is a critical service, needed now more than ever.

"Our dedicated volunteers are going above and beyond to be available for those in need during these unprecedented times and continue to operate our phone service from our branches wherever possible."

The Samaritans can be contacted on their 24 hour helpline 116 123 or at their 24 hour email:  jo@samaritans.org.
