Samantha Knight's killer remains behind bars for psychiatric assessment, judge rules

The man who killed Bondi schoolgirl Samantha Knight will remain behind bars for at least another 28 days, a Sydney court has ruled.

Michael Guider, 68, was jailed in 2002 for 16 years over the girl's 1986 death.

He was due to be released this week but the New South Wales Attorney-General applied to keep him behind bars for another year.

The Government argued Guider was a serial paedophile who had shown no remorse.

Supreme Court Justice Richard Button today imposed an interim detention order that will keep Guider in custody for 28 days.

Justice Button also ordered he be examined separately by a psychologist and psychiatrist.

He said Guider had confronted his "grossly distorted sexuality" and made a "real effort" to overcome it.

Samantha stopped breathing after Guider gave her sleeping pills, intending to take indecent photos of her.

Guider had been let out of jail unsupervised up to 20 times in the past despite fears he would reoffend, a court heard last month.

Arguing for his release, Guiders' lawyer Mathew Johnstone said his client's methodology was known and he could be suitably managed in the community.

But Samantha's mother Tess Knight has said she was "not satisfied that Michael Guider was safe for release".

Neil Tuckerman, who was one of the investigating officers on the Samantha Knight case, said he was horrified to learn that Guider had already been out in the community.

He said the only way to stop him reoffending was to keep him in jail.
