Samantha Jones 'returns' to Sex and the City sequel And Just Like... in clever way

Samantha Jones made an unexpected return to Sex and the City sequel series And Just Like That… via text message.

The iconic character has been absent from the follow up series to the late ‘90s comedy drama after actress Kim Cattrall declined the invite to return – with fans suspecting this decision was, in part, due to the fact she famously does not get along with her former co-stars.

However, the character of Samantha has lived on, but off-screen, in the new show – which began streaming last month – as she moved from the USA to the UK to run a PR agency in London.

In the latest episode of And Just Like That… Samantha made something of a ‘return’ as Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, engaged in a messaging conversation with her.

The fifth episode of the current season saw Carrie harking back to a season two episode of Sex and the City while discussing an intimate issue Samantha had assisted her with.

In scenes that aired in the episode, Carrie announced during a podcast: “You cannot say boundaries and girlfriends in the same sentence.

“My girlfriends are always there for me no matter what. They are there for me.

“In fact, you know what? I remember this time that my friend Samantha Jones even pulled my diaphragm out with her bare hand because it got stuck.”

Carrie’s friend Charlotte Goldenblatt, played by Kristin Davis, later suggested that Carrie let Samantha know that she had discussed their intimate moment on a broadcast – sparking an exchange between the duo.

Carrie was shown texting her old friend: “Hi. Long story short I wanted to let you know, I mentioned that you pulled out my diaphragm on a podcast.”

Samantha then texts back: “One of my finest hours.”

Carrie quickly responds, writing: “Hope that’s okay.”

With Samantha quipping: “Of course. I love that your vagina is getting air time.”

Scenes in And Just Like That… appear to be reflecting the real-life fall out between 65-year-old Kim and her co-stars.

In the show, she has been written out with the excuse she had moved to London while also falling out with Carrie, Charlotte and fellow friend Miranda Hobbes.

There is speculation that the creators of the show hope to entice Kim back to the series – while some fans have lamented that the sequel series is not the same without the British-born actress.

Kim has previously hinted that she will not return to the role, however, telling Piers Morgan back in 2017 at a time when speculation of a third Sex and the City film was in the air.

“It’s a great part. I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it.”
