Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav elected as leader of opposition in UP assembly

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav, who won the Karhal assembly seat, was formally recognised as the leader of opposition in the Uttar Pradesh assembly on Saturday.

“Akhilesh Yadav, member of the UP legislative assembly and leader of Samajwadi Legislature Party is appointed as the leader of opposition in the UP legislative assembly with effect from March 26, 2022,” said a formal press statement issued by Vidhan Sabha principal secretary Pradeep Kumar Dubey.

Presiding over a meeting of the newly elected SP MLAs, Akhilesh said as leader of opposition (LoP) in the state assembly, he will do everything to expose the falsehoods BJP floats on the floor of the house and outside and asked all MLAs to actively participate in the assembly proceedings with full preparation.

Earlier in the day, the Samajwadi Party MLAs elected Akhilesh as leader of the legislature party in the assembly.

During the meeting of the newly elected SP MLAs convened at the party headquarters on Saturday, senior party leader and MLA from Milkipur, Awdhesh Prasad proposed the name of Akhilesh Yadav as the leader of SP MLAs. The proposal was seconded by senior party leader and MLA from Nizamabad, Alam Badi. All other MLAs present in the meeting unanimously approved the proposal.

Similarly, senior leader and MLA from Katehari, Lalji Verma proposed SP chief’s name as leader of the Samajwadi Legislature Party in the UP assembly which was seconded by former minister and party’s national secretary Rajendra Chaudhary and unanimously approved by the MLAs present.

All newly elected SP MLAs were in attendance except Sahaswan MLA Brajesh Yadav whose mother had passed away on Saturday morning.

Akhilesh was sitting MP from Azamgarh but he contested his first assembly election from Karhal in the recently concluded polls and won. Contrary to speculations that SP chief may let go his UP assembly membership to lead the party in 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Akhilesh resigned from the Lok Sabha earlier this week sending across a clear message that he plans to focus on UP politics in a big way.
