Sam Warburton and Nigel Owens lead Sky Sports' A-list team of pundits as new Lions TV channel announced

Sky Sports have revealed their star-studded punditry team for the upcoming Lions tour of South Africa, led by Welsh rugby legend Sam Warburton.

Joining the two-time Lions skipper is Welsh referee and Wales on Sunday columnist Nigel Owens and ex-No.8 Scott Quinnell.

Welsh reporter Sarra Elgan will also be involved.

Sky Sports have also announced that, to go along with their exclusive broadcasting rights for the tour, they will launch a dedicated Lions rugby channel from running from July 17 to August 10.

Fronting Sky's coverage will be the familiar face of Alex Payne and he'll be joined by Warburton, Irish legend Ronan O'Gara and English World Cup-winners Will Greenwood and Maggie Alphonsi.

Four-time Lions coach Ian McGeechan will also be involved alongside Welsh ref Owens.

Ex-winger Bryan Habana will be offering insight from a Springbok perspective and Conor McNamara will be leading the commentary of the matches.

He replaces commentator Miles Harrison, who has been a familiar voice on Sky's coverage of the Lions in recent years. Harrison misses the tour this time having had surgery last week for colon cancer.

Meanwhile, Quinnell will be roaming the UK gauging reaction from the fans at home, who are unable to travel to South Africa due to Covid restrictions.

Sky Sports Managing Director, Jonathan Licht said: “We’re thrilled to be working with the British & Irish Lions to bring our viewers a seventh consecutive Lions tour – a partnership that has now entered its 25th year – and we’re looking forward to seeing some thrilling rugby played in South Africa against the current World Champions.

"With fans unable to cheer on the Lions in person, we’re pleased to be able to bring the best of the action to the Sea of Red back home.”
