Sam Smith says he does not identify as male or female and reveals he once considered a sex change

Sam Smith has opened up about being non-binary, saying that he doesn’t identify with either male or female as he “floats between the two”.

The Stay With Me singer spoke candidly to Jameela Jamil on her Instagram channel for project I Weigh, in which she discusses fame, body image and sexuality.

“You are just you. You are a mixture of all different things. You’re your own special creation. That’s how I take it,” he said.

“I’m not male or female, I think I float somewhere in between. It’s all on a spectrum. I think the same with sexuality.”

Smith said that he had sometimes “thought like a woman” and questioned whether he wanted to have a sex change.

But the singer revealed that when he first heard and researched terms including “non-binary” and “genderqueer”, he “read into it and thought 'f*** that is me'”.

The 26-year-old also discussed his sexuality with Jamil, calling himself “free thinking” when it comes to love and relationships.

Smith said: “I’ve always been very free in terms of thinking about my sexuality.

“You fall in love with people, not genitals. I’ve tried to change that into my thoughts on gender.”

Smith spoke at length about his relationship to his own body and his struggles with his body image, dating way back to his childhood.

Piers Morgan later mocked his comments, saying he will now be 'identifying as Smith' in a bid to claim royalties.
