Sam Smith 'in backstage bust-up after £500k BRITs set malfunction which led to swift exit'

Sam Smith was reportedly left furious after their BRITs performance was almost cancelled due to technical difficulties with their £500,000 set.

The singer, 30, who is non-binary and uses gender neutral pronouns, is believed to have been arguing backstage over the delays caused by the malfunctioning set for hit Unholy on Saturday.

Sam allegedly kicked up a fuss as crew tried to fix the technical issues on the set which affected the live TV awards ceremony's schedule and resulted in a video montage of Adele briefly appearing on our screens.

Due to the delays caused by the expensive set glitches, the performance was said to be close to the never materialising whatsoever and the fallouts led to them making a swift exit after the conclusion of the BRITs.

A source told The Sun: "Sam’s performance might have appeared seamless but behind-the-scenes it was a nightmare.

"The whole set was built and ready to go but then a malfunction meant it had to be pulled off.

"Stormzy was moved forward and Sam was told there was a possibility their performance might be pulled altogether.

"Sam was understandably furious and it was pretty tense backstage."

The Mirror have contacted Sam's representatives for comment.

Sam missed out adding to their three BRIT Awards at the 2023 ceremony after losing out to Harry Styles on two occasions for Best Pop/R&B Act and Song of the Year with Kim Petras for Unholy.

Sam made a statement with their outfit for the glamorous event on Saturday as they wore a daring black latex bodysuit with bold shoulders and calf outbursts causing them to struggle as they walked down the red carpet.

The attire prompted an outburst from critic Piers Morgan, who accused Sam of being "over-thirsty for attention" in a savage tweet.

Posting a snap of Sam in the curious look, the journalist-turned-telly-personality wrote: "Methinks 'they' is getting a teeny weeny bit over-thirsty for attention #BRITs."

Earlier this month, Petras became the first openly transgender artist to win a Grammy Award for Unholy, alongside Smith, which claimed the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance gong.

The duo performed at the glamorous event held at the Crypto.com arena in Downtown Los Angeles but attracted a string of odd complaints being filed.

TMZ reported that they have obtained 18 complaints filed with the Federal Communications Commission following the event.
