Sam Ricketts claims Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool team selection for FA Cup 4th round replay will cost Shrewsbury £500k

Sam Ricketts claims Jurgen Klopp's decision to rest Liverpool's first team stars for tonight's FA Cup clash with Shrewsbury Town will cost his side £500,000.

The former Wales international saw his side come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in the original tie last month, meaning the pair will face off at Anfield again tonight in a fourth round replay.

Ahead of the game on Merseyside, Klopp revealed he would field a team consisting of fringe and youth players, with his big guns such as Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane currently enjoying a winter break.

Under-23s boss Neil Critchley will take charge of the Reds, with Klopp admitting he won't even attend the game.

As a result, ticket prices have been significantly slashed while the game has not been chosen for live TV coverage.

And ex-Swansea City man Ricketts says the League One club will subsequently lose out on around half a million pounds in revenue from broadcast fees and TV money.

“It is huge. The revenue is vitally important for a club like ours who are self-sustaining," he told the Mirror.

“For someone like us if we are playing Liverpool’s first team you are generating up to £600,000 as opposed to £100,000.

“At a club like ours every penny counts. That is the biggest disappointment that we will lack revenue.

“Historically you would say Liverpool away would generate a lot but what we are going to get is very different.

“It is an opportunity to build something that lasts us for 10-15 years and is a real legacy. That money could make the pitches better or mean we can get one extra player.”

After the previous meeting between the sides, Ricketts - who won 52 caps for his country - spoke with Liverpool manager Klopp about the reasons behind his decision to rest his key stars.

“He did to be fair. I spoke to Jurgen after the first game and we had a real good conversation for 20-30 minutes or so," added Ricketts.

“He was very open. He explained his thinking and I fully understand it. If you are promised a winter break you deserve a winter break.”
