Sam Johnstone hits out at Bruno Fernandes penalty technique after Manchester United defeat

West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has hit out at Bruno Fernandes' penalty technique following the Baggies' defeat by Manchester United over the weekend.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side ground out a gritty 1-0 win over West Brom on Saturday night, with Fernandes netting the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

United were awarded a penalty following a handball in the box before Johnstone dived low to his left to deny the Portuguese midfielder from 12 yards.

Despite his excellent save Johnstone was penalised for coming off his line with Fernandes given the chance to retake the penalty.

Fernandes changed his run-up for the second attempt as he hopped, skipped and jumped towards the ball before firing it beyond Johnstone.

The former United goalkeeper was furious with the re-take decision and believes Fernandes gained an unfair advantage by being allowed to adopt such a staggered technique.

Adam Sells, managing director of Sells Goalkeeper Products, tweeted about the penalty change he'd like to see administered in the Premier League.

"Moving off the line early yesterday, saw @samjohnstone50 denied a great penalty save," he wrote on social media. "For many years I have held the view that the keeper should be allowed to move anywhere in the six yard box from a spot kick. Harder to score? More realistic? Easy to administer?"

Johnstone quoted the tweet with his own suggestion to penalise opponents for adopting a staggered run-up to the ball: "And a striker shouldn’t be able to hop skip and jump before kicking it."
