Sam Heughan shares Outlander season seven release update as filming continues

Sam Heughan, our beloved Scottish hunk, has shared a major update when it comes to the release date of the seventh season of hit show Outlander.

The actor, who plays Jamie Fraser in the StarzTV series, has been chatting to Esquire about the cliffhanger ending at the end of season six of Outlander, as reported by the Daily Express.

In the interview with Esquire, Heughan left fans feeling a bit deflated with his filming update, saying: "We’re shooting season seven and it’s flying by. It feels like we started yesterday but already we’re on our sixth episode.

"This season is going to take a while, it’s an 18-episode bumper mega season, so we probably won’t be finished until March or February of next year. It’s a big one this year as last year we had to reduce it by six episodes because of Covid and my co-star [Caitríona Balfe] was pregnant, so we moved it.”

While fans may be feeling a little disappointed in having to wait till 2023 for the new series - 18 episodes seems worth it to outlast Droughtlander. Many viewers have also questioned both Heughan and author Diana Gabaldon on how the show will end.

Sam exclusively revealed what Diana had sneakily sent him as she was writing the final book. He said: "She emailed me the last few pages of what will be the last book very early on, I think in the first few weeks of shooting and no one else has seen that I think, apart from one other exec producer.

"Even Caitríona’s not seen it and I’m sworn to secrecy.”

At the end of the sixth season, Catriona's character Claire Fraser was arrested for the death of Malva Christie and her unborn baby - a crime she did not commit. The season ended on the wife of Jamie awaiting his rescue.

Do you think he has made it in time before she goes on trial? Only time will tell. And possibly Sam Heughan will tell too, if he goes into any more Outlander interviews - secrets never stay hidden long, do they?

All six seasons of Outlander are available to watch on Starzplay in the UK, and Starz in the US.
