Sam Heughan's delight at being honoured by his 'favourite place in Edinburgh'

Sam Heughan has expressed his delight after being honoured by his "favourite place in Edinburgh".

The Lyceum Theatre announced this week they would pay tribute to the actor after a fundraiser in the Outlander star's name raised an incredible cash sum for the venue. A permanent plaque reading "A theatre so close to my heart - Sam Heughan" has been installed on the back of a premium seat in the auditorium.

A total of £57,632.17 was raised for The Lyceum through the Save A Seat For Sam campaign, and a virtual event held in the run up to Christmas. The aim was to help save the venue from the financial threat posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Announcing news of the plaque on social media this week, the Save A Seat For Sam campaign, started by pals Savannah Forge and Tash Pow, posted: "So delighted to finally share this with everyone, As a thank you to all of you for supporting the Save A Seat For Sam fundraiser and a special thank you to Sam Heughan, the Lyceum Theatre has dedicated a theatre seat in Sam's honour."

They add: "Unfortunately due to all the Covid-19 restrictions, an official unveiling of the plaque or visit by the guest of honour couldn't be possible at this time. We will update everyone if something is arranged once the conditions are back to normal.

"We are so grateful for The Lyceum for this wonderful gesture! It was truly a pleasure working with them so closely these past few months.

"A huge thank you to Mairi Rosko and Miriam Wright, the Development Team at Lyceum. You ladies are amazing and we both appreciate all your support.

"And a special thank you to Sam Heughan who inspired us to look beyond the challenges that surround us and help such a worthy cause during these unprecedented times."

Heughan was clearly delighted with the gesture, posting on social media: "Such a wonderful cause and a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that supported this brilliant theatre. I hope it inspires others to follow their dreams and to sit in that seat one day."

He added: "Incredible!!! Thanks to everyone who donated to help my favourite place in Edinburgh."
