Sam Heughan reveals what he will miss most about Outlander when show ends

Sam Heughan has revealed what he will miss most about Outlander when the show eventually comes to an end.

The Dumfries-born star has played Jamie Fraser on the hit historical fantasy series since 2013, alongside Caitriona Balfe who plays Claire Fraser. The show is going into its seventh season which is due to wrap filming early next year, and is yet to be renewed by Starz for an eighth season.

Both fans and actors are beginning to wonder if this will be the end for Outlander, and Sam, 42, has reflected on what he will miss most. Speaking to Square Mile , he said: “What will I miss? I’ll miss the camaraderie, the people, the routine, the routine is pretty tough, pretty full on.

"But there’s something wonderful about it, going to work every day, you know you all are going to be fucked but the end. It’s hard work, it’s full on, but you’re all in it together. So I guess that camaraderie and being around people you enjoy being around.”

Earlier this year, Heughan spoke about the possibility of his character being killed off in Outlander – and he admitted it may not be long in coming. In an interview with Gold Derby, the Suspect actor said: “I think about his mortality. I think Jamie thinks about that a lot more now.”

“He’s not worried about dying, but I think it’s the consequences of dying.”

Heughan continued: “We talk about Jamie’s nine lives… I think he’s had about seven or six of them. Each time it costs him more, you know? It’s an interesting one because I think it’s in the scripts but I think it’s [also] in Diana’s books.”

Heughan's comments come after Outlander author Diana Gabaldon dropped another hint that the upcoming seventh season could be the last one - and the prequel may be an entirely new cast altogether. The 70-year-old, who is currently working on the 10th and final book in the Outlander series, took to social media and suggested that Sam and Caitriona will not be featured in the prequel.

In response to a tweet from a fan that read: "Question, what are you, all of us and the cast and crew going to do when all of this is over? When you finish writing the prequel, will there be an all new cast? Will you decide to retire? I’ll miss you all tremendously."

She said: "Well, I should think there will have to be a new cast, won't there?" Fans were quick to share what they thought of the cryptic tweet. One wrote: "We will miss all of the former cast!" All good things must come to an End, but that doesn't mean that it can't be born again. I look for Willie to fill his father's shoes and find the love of his life," another wrote.

With another adding: "Yes, which will then become a different show. I hope to still be here."
