Sam Heughan drops James Bond hint with Instagram picture

Outlander star Sam Heughan teased fans about becoming a 'spy' as in his latest Instagram post.

The Scots actor has long been touted as a potential candidate for the new James Bond role alongside Bridgerton's Rege Jean Page and Tom Hardy.

Sam actually already auditioned for the role in 2005 of the iconic spy prior to Daniel Craig’s official casting.

He revealed to Radio Times latterly: "I met [producer] Barbara Broccoli and [Casino Royale director] Martin Campbell.

"I did a scene and they had the gun from The Man with the Golden Gun on the table and I remember thinking, ‘Wow, this is incredible’. It was surreal.

Sam Heughan is tipped as a favourite to replace Daniel Craig as the next 007 (PUBLICITY PIX)

"He’s a character we’ve all grown up with."

Sam, who is currently in SAS: Red Notice also said: "I don’t think any actor would ever say no. If I was asked to audition for it, I would be delighted."

Now he's toyed with his fans again by posting up a picture of himself in a beige coat with an upturned collar, sunglasses on, and a 70's spy style chapeau hat.

He wrote simply: "Spy story..."

Many were willing to complete the narrative with one fan saying: "You would make a great Bond."

Another added: "You are made for playing Bond."

And another said: "Who is that mystery man."

And another replied: "007!"
