Sam Foley insists he has no regrets over St Mirren move after welcome return to training

By Kyle Gunn

Saints midfielder Sam Foley has revealed a move north of the border was just what the doctor ordered as he gears up for his second Premiership season in black and white.

The Englishman decided to try something different after becoming a free agent at Northampton Town and arrived in Paisley last summer.

And that’s a decision the recently announced vice captain has not regretted for a single minute.

Foley told Express Sport: “My first season for St Mirren couldn’t have gone any better on a personal level I guess.

“Feeling the fans get behind me straight away definitely had a positive effect.

“I had come up with zero expectations on how this experience would be and I’ve ended up loving every minute.”

Foley was disappointed that the campaign couldn’t be concluded due to the Covid-19 pandemic because he thought the team was improving with every game.

The Buddies squad was able to return to training last week and the 33-year-old says it was nice to see his teammates again.

While he and the team are desperate to play again competitively, he reckons there’s a bit more training to do before that happens.

Foley added: “It was a bit disappointing how the season ended as I felt we were beginning to show real improvements in our play.

“It was great to get back into the football club and see all the lads. Even if I still can’t understand most of them!

“I think there’s a lot of work to be done before we’ll be ready to play properly.

“It’s been very difficult being off and unable to train adequately however, if training is anything to go by all the players are desperate to get back out there.”
