Sam Fender wins Brit for Best Rock/Alternative Act as band celebrate at O2 Arena

Sam Fender and his band looked absolutely ecstatic as the North Shields singer took home the trophy for Best Rock/Alternative at Tuesday’s Brit Awards.

Sam was up for three awards at this year’s Brits and was hotly tipped to win to win the Rock accolade, with it being voted for by fans on TikTok.

Sam has been canvassing for votes via his social media over the last few week and it paid off as his name was called by Rolling Stone legend Ronnie Wood as the winner, beating off competition from the likes of Coldplay and Tom Grennan.

During his acceptance speech, Sam gave shout outs to the fans who voted, his manager Owain and everyone back in the North East.

In an interview on ITV2 before the ceremony started, Sam said he really wanted to win the Rock/Alternative award, telling host Clara Amfo: "Anything voted for by the fans means more to me, that would be amazing."

Sam, who landed a top 5 hit with decent single Seventeen Going Under and his bandmates looked delighted as they headed up to accept the award at the O2 Arena in London, three years after the 27-year-old took home the Critics Choice award.

Earlier on in the evening, Sam and his musician pals posed up a storm on the Brit Awards 2022 red carpet, with saxophone player Johnny Blue Hat donning a retro Newcastle United shirt for the occasion.

Prior to them heading to the O2, guitarist Dean Thompson took to Instagram to post: "JESUS CHRIST. These nerves/excitement are totally overwhelming. Keep your fingers, toes, legs, arms and eyes crossed we don’t absolutely fill our kegs live on TV.

"ITS COMING HOME TO NE29 MAN!!!!! (Manifest, manifest, manifest)"

Liver coverage of this year's Brit Awards gets going at 8pm on ITV, with the red carpet show airing on ITV2 before it.
