Sam Fender's debut album Hypersonic Missiles is number 1 and the fastest selling vinyl of 2019

Sam Fender is the toast of Tyneside after entering the charts at number 1 with his debut album Hypersonic Missiles.

2019 has already been a stellar year for the North Shields musician. It started with him winning the Brits Critics Choice Award and has also seen him play to fan across the world as songs like Will We Talk and the album's sax laden title track have been downloaded and streamed by millions of people.

That all boded well for the release of Hypersonic Missiles last week and within hours of the album going on sale it was at number 1 on iTunes.

Midweek chart updates put Sam well ahead of his nearest rival in the official charts too and on Friday evening it was revealed that the 25-year-old had claimed the number 1 spot.

Sam racked up 41,000 chart sales to take the top spot, 8,200 of which was on vinyl, making it the fastest-selling vinyl album of 2019.

Speaking to OfficialCharts.com Sam said: “This is beyond dream territory. I thought my dreams were complete when I played Jools Holland, never mind this madness. Thanks to all the fans. This is just the start.”

Sam will celebrate his number 1 with his band when they play a secret location on Tyneside on Friday night, for a gig held in conjunction with Spotify.
