Sam Fender opens up about his rise to fame and having tea with Elton John

Singer Sam Fender has spoken about his incredible year that's included dinner with superstar Elton John.

Hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc probed the singer further to find out more about the encounter.

He added: "It wasn't like a tea. There was a salmon to start with a pea mint thing.

"There was a chocolate pudding with strawberries and pistachios in and like a chocolate ganache."

Sam , who performed to a sell-out crowd at Tynemouth Priory, spoke to the hosts about going from small gigs to selling thousands of tickets in an hour.

He said: "It kind of went crackers in the last six months ago.

"We were doing 100 cap shows about six months ago around the country and then, six months later we did 40,000 tickets in an hour."

When asked if it had taken its toll on him, he said: "No, not all. I feel great."

The singer, who is due to release his debut album this month,  told viewers he grew up around music.

"My dad used to like do residencies in all the social clubs in Newcastle," he said.

"He played all the way through in the 70s, 80s, even the 90s when I was born, so I used watch him play when I was a kid.

"When I was two years old and had no ear protection - great parents.

His songs, which have landed him a Brit Award, are known for having a political nature and cover topics such as suicide, race and sexual abuse.

When asked about his songwriting, he said: "I write everything myself but tend to write about what's around me, or on the internet or on the TV or what's going on in the world.

"Never with any answers, always with just with just lots of questions."
