Sam Fender on massive billboard in Newcastle as his debut album shoots to number 1

It was without a doubt one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year and Sam Fender's debut has got off to an amazing start less than a day after its release.

Hypersonic Missiles came out at the stroke of midnight, with Sam himself counting down to its launch on his Instagram.

And within a matter, any nerves the North Shields musician had about how it would do, were put to bed as it rocketed to number 1 on iTunes.

The 25-year-old Brit Award winner's debut has had glowing reviews from the harshest of music critics and has generated an absolutely huge buzz on social media with people raving about how impressed they are with it.

And there's no mistaking the album is out in Newcastle. As well record store Beyond Vinyl opening at midnight so people could get their hands on a physical copy, Sam's face is plastered on a massive billboard on Clayton Street, just along from The Dog & Parrot and opposite St Mary's Cathedral.

Speaking to Chronicle Live on the eve of Hypersonic Missiles' release, Sam said he's blown away by the support he gets from his homeland , saying "I'm massively proud to be from the North East and to get so much love from the people of North Shields, Newcastle and loads of other places means so much - they're all legends!

"Me and the band have taken an organic approach to building a fanbase, it hasn't just come overnight; there are people that have been there right from the start.

"And then to get messages of support from people like Ant & Dec - I was buzzing! - those guys are just total treasures!"
