Sam Fender joined on St James’ Park stage by brother Liam as Friday night becomes family affair

Sam Fender was joined by brother Liam for his St James’ Park opener in Newcastle on Friday night, with the Seventeen Going Under star telling his packed house of fans he ‘wouldn’t be on the stage’ if it wasn’t for his older sibling.

Just as hot a ticket as NUFC matches these days, Sam’s first night at St James' Park was a night that it felt the whole city had been counting down to, with some fans even camping out at the ground from the early hours to ensure they got a great spot down the front.

The atmosphere inside the stadium really has to be experienced to be believed and Sam and his band delivered a show that lived up to the epic occasion and the huge anticipation that was in the air.

The North Shields icon’s entry to Local Hero was a moment anyone at the gig will never forget, before setlist opener Will We Talk once again proved why it’s been the number one choice to kick things off for years now.

There was a surprise for Sam’s captive audience early doors when he introduced fellow musician Liam to the stage and mentioning just how big an influence he’d been on him.

Liam, who is making ripples of his own thanks to great singles like Don’t Follow Me Down, joined Sam for a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s I’m on Fire, with him looking just as much of an effortless showman as his younger sibling.

The brothers looked like they were having the time of their lives up on stage together, as they basked in the glory of a night that Sam said he’d joked about, but never in his wildest dreams, imagined would actually happen.

The capacity crowd at St James’ on Friday was full of family and friends who would have been immensely proud. What a night for Newcastle and what a night for the Fenders.
