Sam Davies to stay at the Dragons next season after agreeing to take pay cut

Sam Davies will stay at the Dragons after accepting the longer term pay cuts being implemented at the region.

Last month, the region announced that 25 per cent pay cuts were being taken by the players over the next 12 months to combat the financial challenges brought about by Covid-19.

It then transpired the finer details were yet to be worked out with individual players and it was thought that Davies was unhappy with the revised terms being offered to him.

He would have been able to leave Rodney Parade immediately if the region's bosses were unable to provide him with an acceptable new deal.

“There’s an on-going process happening at the moment," Davies said in August.

“That’s the kind of on-going process for however long it is going to take. Negotiations will be taking place soon and I suppose that’s when the decision will come.

“I don’t want to make my decision too early as I have ambitions to play for Wales.

“I’m extremely happy here at the moment and we are building something special. I suppose we will see what unfolds.”

But it seems a resolution was reached and the mercurial fly-half will remain at the region next season.

In a short statement, the Dragons' confirmed: "Dragons Rugby has completed all negotiations with its playing squad regarding salaries.

"The region announced last month that a resolution was in place with its players and, to meet the financial challenges of next season, they had agreed amended terms to their contract and a 25% reduction in salary over the next 12 months.

"Dragons Rugby is pleased to confirm it has now finished the implementation process of the pay agreement with all its players."

Davies is, however, out of contract next summer and it will be a priority for Dragons boss Dean Ryan to keep him on board.
