Sam Davies addresses his future at the Dragons after kicking 'like a donkey' against Ospreys

Sam Davies has revealed negotiations over his future with the Dragons will be starting soon.

The eight-times Wales capped outside-half addressed his situation after missing the conversion which would have given the Gwent region a rare away victory over the Ospreys in the Guinness PRO14.

They had to settle for a 20-20 draw at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium with Davies admitting: “We probably should have won that game.

“There was a few chances out there we didn’t finish off. I kicked like a donkey.”

Davies is on the radar of English Premiership big-hitters Wasps and Bath after not yet agreeing to take a pay cut at the Dragons.

WalesOnline revealed last Monday the 26-year-old could potentially leave the Dragons if a deal cannot be agreed with paymasters.

He has a year remaining on his contract at the Welsh Rugby Union-owned region.

Davies said: “There’s an on-going process happening at the moment.

“That’s the kind of on-going process for however long it is going to take. Negotiations will be taking place soon and I suppose that’s when the decision will come.

“I don’t want to make my decision too early as I have ambitions to play for Wales.

“I’m extremely happy here at the moment and we are building something special. I suppose we will see what unfolds.”

Davies would become ineligible for Wales if he went into exile because he is 52 caps short of the WRU-imposed threshold for players based outside the country.

He stressed: “Coming to the Dragons has been a breath of fresh air.

“I have been backed and given a licence to run the team, which is pretty nice. It does give me a chance to show my talent.”

Davies has been asked, along with the rest of the Dragons squad, to take a 25 per cent reduction in wages over the next 12 months.

He would become a free agent if he doesn’t accept a pay cut or any other deal the Dragons may put forward, such as extending his contract.

It’s understood a move to England could double his current salary.

Dragons director of rugby Dean Ryan said last week: “Like all players, he is going through the implementation of our pay agreement.

“There’s a period where we need to implement what we have negotiated, so there is no yes or no at this particular point.”
