If the words “prima donna” and “NFL” are being used in the same sentence, odds are a wide receiver is the topic of conversation.
While not every wideout exudes the eccentric tendencies of the league’s biggest stars, Giants playmaker Odell Beckham Jr. could be a name that comes to mind when associating the position with that particular description. From sideline spectacle to endzone dancer, OBJ is not one to shy away from the spotlight.
That’s why Jets quarterback Sam Darnold may have been a bit surprised to find out Beckham is just a “normal dude.”
“I just met Odell [Beckham] today. There’s so much to think about Odell and who is Odell? There’s this aura around him and then I just met him today and he’s a normal dude,” Darnold told Sports Illustrated. “You know what I’m saying? He’s a cool guy. He was like, ‘I’m going to be out in L.A. Let’s hang,’ just like normal person. For me, it was like, ‘Oh he’s just dancing all the time, just out of control.’ He’s just a normal person, which I think was really cool.”
The Big Apple isn’t the market for everyone. However, there are several ways to address the limelight. While players, such as Darnold, try to avoid drawing too much attention to themselves, others, like Beckham, seem to have fun with it from time to time.
Still, that doesn’t make him different than anyone else. Just ask Darnold.
