Sam Darnold hoping to emulate Peyton Manning in Adam Gase’s offense

Former Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning threw 55 touchdown passes in 2013 with Adam Gase running Denver’s offense. Gase is now the Jets’ head coach and he’s hoping Sam Darnold will also find success in his offense.

To be like the best, you have to study the best.

That’s exactly what Darnold has been doing.

“He’s watched so much [Manning film] he can bring up certain plays from different seasons to where he’ll ask a question — ‘Hey, what made him do this? Or why did he think this way?’” Gase recently told SI.com’s Albert Breer. “He’s really gone through a lot of this stuff already.”

It’s probably not realistic to expect a 21-year-old Darnold to match Manning’s record-breaking season with Gase. But it is realistic to expect the USC product to top his 17-touchdown rookie season.

Gase would probably be thrilled if Darnold put up half the numbers Manning did during Denver’s historic 2013 season.
