Sam Darnold gathers teammates for throwing sessions in California

Sam Darnold continues to be more of a leader each and everyday.

The second-year quarterback has repeatedly said this offseason that he wants to take on more of a leadership role this season and beyond. With the Jets on their break before the start of training camp, most players are pretty much on their own working out. But Darnold had other ideas.

According to the Daily News’ Manish Mehta, Darnold recently gathered some teammates in Southern California for a throwing session. Additionally, he is expected to have another throwing session with about six teammates sometime this week.

With the Jets having a new offensive system this season under head coach Adam Gase, Darnold needs all the practice he can get. Most young quarterbacks don’t have to learn a whole new playbook in their second season in the NFL.

Meanwhile, Darnold still has to get adjusted to his wide receivers. He and Robby Anderson clicked at the end of last season. However, Quincy Enunwa was limited last year due to injuries, while the Jets also brought in Jamison Crowder to play the slot. That said, it’s unknown who was in California.

The Jets need to continue seeing these types of things out of Darnold. He’s the future of this team and he can’t just show up to the mandatory camps and be done with it. As the quarterback, you’re expected to do more and Darnold seems to be picking up on that pretty quickly.
