Sam Cosgrove knocks back Aberdeen departure as £2m France move falls apart

Aberdeen striker Sam Cosgrove has knocked back a £2 million move to Guingamp.

The Ligue 2 side tried to land the Dons star ahead of the French signing deadline on Wednesday.

Aberdeen and Guingamp were in talks over a fee and had granted Cosgrove permission to open talks.

The problem for the 23-year-old is that he was only given 24 hours to make up his mind before the French signing deadline passed.

Cosgrove wanted more time to weigh up his options.

He wasn’t 100 per cent convinced on the move to the second tier of French football and decided he would rather remain at Aberdeen.

Guingamp could yet resurrect their interest when their window re-opens in a month’s time but it seems unlikely Cosgrove’s position will change.

The prolific striker also has strong interest from England, where Stoke City and Middlesbrough have all had him watched.

He was also the subject of an approach from New York Red Bulls in the last window.

Cosgrove, who still has two years left on his contract, is happy to remain at Pittodrie, continue building his reputation and to keep his hot scoring run going.

The big Englishman was Aberdeen’s top scorer with 23 goals last season and that was on the back of the 21 he netted the previous campaign.

Cosgrove has proved to be something of a bargain buy since Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes snapped him up from Carlisle for £40,000 in January 2018.

Aberdeen could yet sell over the summer as they look to help fill the cash void of COVID-19.
