Sam Burgess has been hailed a hero after rushing to a man’s aid who was choking during in an eating challenge in Sydney.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs squad were at the Sydney Fish Markets for a team bonding session when a staff member from Decosti Seafood began fighting for breath, according to Fox Sports.

An unnamed witness said Burgess helped the man for 30-40 seconds before he eventually swallowed the piece of food lodged in his throat.

“The Souths boys were at work doing a fish-eating challenge and then one of the managers got involved,” the witness said of Burgess, who rejoined the Rabbitohs this season after cutting short his forray into rugby union with Bath. “They were eating and some seafood got caught in his throat and he started choking.

“Sam raced straight over and grabbed him and started putting his body weight on him to try and get it out. If Sam hadn’t have helped it could have been bad. I’m telling you Sam is a hero. He saved this life. Another 30 seconds and it could have gone either way.

“All the guys were amazing. Taking photos with people. Michael Maguire was great and I’m a Manly fan but it’s important people know what a great thing Sam did.”
