Sam Bird's winning streak in Monaco encourages him ahead of Formula E's iconic race

Formula E race on the full Monaco street circuit for the first time on Saturday - but Sam Bird believes he already holds the edge.

The Brit already has two race wins under his belt on the iconic streets of Monte Carlo, including victory from his days racing in F1's feeder series, GP2.

Bird surrendered the Formula E championship lead after leaving Valencia without scoring a point last month.

But he believes Monaco is the perfect place for him to regain top spot.

"It is a circuit that I have always loved and enjoyed racing on and going as fast as possible.

"It's a circuit that I have always gone well on before. I don't want to put any pressure on myself but the last two times I have raced there, I have won, so fingers crossed that I will be very competitive again this weekend."

Unlike F1, Formula E is designed specifically for street circuits, which opens up the prospect of the most exciting races in the principality's history this weekend.

Cars will be illuminated in neon lights as they drive through the famous tunnel section - and plenty of overtakes are guaranteed.

"We throw the rulebook out when it comes to overtaking in Formula E," Bird said.

"When the move is there to be done, it gets done. There will be more overtaking in Formula E than there will be in Formula One.

"In Formula One, they are much more aero-efficient cars and it's much harder to follow closely behind another car. We can follow inches apart.

"The way we generate speed isn't through downforce and aerodynamics, it is through mechanical grip, so we can follow very closely and therefore I think you will see more overtaking."

Monaco is the home of motorsport's elite, with the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc among its highest-profile residents.

Bird is very much FE royalty, but insists he will not be swapping his home in Sandbanks to join his illustrious friends.

"It's not the south coast of France, but it is the south coast of the UK," Bird quipped.

"I've got two step kids, I have a wife here, I have to consider the step kids' grandma and grandad, their biological father, I can't take them away from them. It would be unfair on the kids and I think they would probably resent me from doing that just to get a tax break. So, I thought about it for a split second and it was a big resounding no."

Bird has topped the Formula E championship standings at some point in each of the last five seasons, but this year perhaps signals his best opportunity to turn a podium into gold.

"I am on the right lines but it is going to take some more wins, it's going to take quite a few more podiums, it's going to take consistency, speed and maybe a bit of luck in there as well.

"This is one of, if not the, hardest championships to win in global motorsport. If you combine all of these things that I have said, then maybe you have got a chance of winning the title."

  • The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will be racing at an adapted Circuit de Monaco with live coverage on BBC iPlayer, BBC Website and Eurosport 2 from 14:30 Saturday May 8
