Sam Bennett leaves BORA-hansgrohe in bid to ride in Tour de France

Irish sprint sensation Sam Bennett looks set to feature in next year's Tour de France after parting ways with team BORA-hansgrohe this morning.

The Carrick-on-Suir rider, 29, has left the German team after being left out of their Giro d'Italia and Tour de France teams this year - despite recording momentous stage victories in last year's Giro before taking two wins in August's Vuelta a Espana.

Bennett spent six years with the team, but missed out on riding in cycling's greatest tour in recent years due to sprinting great Peter Sagan's dominance in France keeping him out of the team for the tour.

According to reports, Bennett is set to join Deceuninck-QuickStep in 2020 to become their lead sprinter - replacing their current star man Elia Viviani - who's joining Cofidis for next year.

In a statement from BORA-hansgrohe this morning, the wheels were set in motion for what could be the next step in Bennett's career.

The statement read: "“After a great success story in the past years, Bora-Hansgrohe and Sam Bennett have decided to go separate ways.

“Over the last six years, Bora-Hansgrohe developed Sam Bennett into one of the best sprinters in the peloton. Against this background, it however became more and more difficult to align the team’s and rider’s goals.

“Therefore, Bora-Hansgrohe’s management has decided to accept Sam Bennett’s wish to leave Bora-Hansgrohe and continue his journey with another team.

“Bora-Hansgrohe wishes Sam Bennett all the best for his future and hopes that he can live up to his sporting dreams.”
