Sam Bennett in the hunt for Tour de France green jersey as he goes level with leader Peter Sagan

We're looking at a first real duel for the Tour de France green jersey in several years as Sam Bennett has emerged as a major challenger to Peter Sagan's grip on the title.

The Czech star has won seven of the last eight green jerseys, awarded to the best overall sprinter, in the grand tour - blowing away competition in the early stages almost every year.

But his former Bora-Hansgrohe teammate Sam Bennett, who played second fiddle to the sprinter in recent years, is well and truly in the mix this year with new team Deceuninck–Quick-Step.

The Carrick-on-Suir native is eyeing his first stage victory at the tour this year, and narrowly missed out in yesterday's third stage to Australian Caleb Ewan.

The explosive Irishman soon recovered today, being the quickest out of the bunch to scoop up precious intermediate sprint points midway through the stage.

That now leaves Bennett and Sagan locked on 83 points for the green jersey, with the Czech now entangled in a serious fight for the title after securing his 126th jersey yesterday.

With two flat stages on the way before the race hits the Pyrenees this weekend, Bennett could see himself in green heading towards the second half of the race.
