Sam Bennett becomes the first Irish rider to wear Tour de France green jersey in 31 years

Sam Bennett has made history today as he became the first Irish rider to wear the Tour de France green jersey for 31 years.

After a win in an intermediate sprint and a third-placed finish in today's stage, the Carrick-on-Suir rider now leads the points classification.

He took home 40 points today to leapfrog Peter Sagan and distance himself from other rivals to take hold the jersey.

The last Irishman to hold the illustrious jersey was legend Sean Kelly in 1989, and the sprinter will don the jersey for tomorrow's sixth stage.

He now finds himself nine points ahead of Sagan in second and 30 points clear of third placed Alexander Kristoff in the battle to hold onto the jersey.

Bennett was the virtual green jersey holder after just 48 km today as he took all 20 points up for grabs in an intermediate sprint.

He was followed by rivals Caleb Ewan and Sagan at the line as he opened up a seven point lead over the Czech star ahead of the day's finish.

Bennett has been chasing the jersey as well as an elusive stage win for days after two close calls - including a heartbreaking second place finish on the race's third stage on Monday.
