Sam Altman Talks About AI as ‘Life Coach’

OpenAI recently launched its most powerful GPT-5 model. While there has been some controversy around the rollout, CEO Sam Altman has shared his thoughts on the GPT-5. He stated that many users are forming stronger attachments to specific AI models than they have to past technologies. In a post on X, Altman admitted that suddenly deprecating older models people relied on was “a mistake.”

Altman said that some people are using ChatGPT in ways that resemble therapy or life coaching. However, he also warned about the risks associated with a small percentage of users who struggle to separate fiction from reality. While OpenAI values user freedom, he said the company feels a responsibility to introduce new technology in a way that avoids reinforcing delusions or undermining long-term well-being.

We plan to follow the principle of ‘treat adult users like adults, ‘ which in some cases will include pushing back on users to ensure they are getting what they really want.

Interestingly, Altman has predicted a future where billions may turn to AI for their most important decisions, something he called both promising and “uneasy.” He said OpenAI is better equipped than past tech companies to measure impact, using tools that track how people’s short- and long-term goals evolve.

It’s important to keep in mind that the comments from Altman come at a time when OpenAI is testing a 3,000-per-week limit for GPT-5’s “Thinking” capability. Altman said that as AI becomes a trusted source for major life decisions, both OpenAI and society will need to ensure the technology remains a net positive.
