Sam Altman Says AI Could Cure Cancer, If We Build Enough Compute

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has shared his vision to massively scale the AI infrastructure. Altman has stated that access to artificial intelligence could soon be seen as a fundamental human right and a key driver of the global economy.

In his recent blog post titled Abundant Intelligence, Altman stated that AI growth has been astonishing and warned that the next phase will require an unprecedented level of computing power. He even suggested that with enough resources, AI has the potential to solve some of the biggest challenges, like curing cancer or delivering tailored tutoring to every student on the planet.

When the majority of companies are prioritizing and chasing breakthroughs, Altman believes that the solution is to expand capacity vastly. He even proposed to create a factory that is capable of producing a gigawatt of new infrastructure every week. However, he noted that achieving this will take years of effort and breakthroughs across chips, energy, robotics, and construction.

Altman also emphasized building the infrastructure in the United States. However, he said that the progress on chip manufacturing and energy production has lagged behind other nations. Along with that, he also mentioned that the project is both technically and strategically imperative to keep the US competitive in this AI race.

The company is planning to reveal more details in the coming months, including the partners involved and how the initiative will be financed. Interestingly, Allman also hinted at a new idea for funding, where he linked increased computing directly with the revenue growth.

Though it’s important to keep in mind that this is not something new, OpenAI has been actively partnering with many companies to build the infrastructure needed to stay ahead in the AI race. For example, recently OpenAI and NVIDIA have signed a letter of intent for a strategic partnership to deploy at least 10 GB of NVIDIA systems to power OpenAI’s next generation of AI models. With this deal, NVIDIA is planning to invest up to $100 billion. Along with that, the company has also closed a massive $300 billion cloud deal with Oracle.

So all these deals, along with Altman’s latest blog post, indicate that the company is aggressively expanding its AI infrastructure.
