Sam Allardyce names the Crystal Palace player who surprised him with his performance vs Everton

Former Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce has criticised Eagles defender Gary Cahill for the time and space he allowed Everton forward Richarlison in the build-up to his goal in Palace's 3-1 defeat at Goodison Park on Saturday lunchtime.

Just eight minutes after Palace had equalised through Christian Benteke's first goal in almost a year, livewire Richarlison put the home side back in front with a superb individual goal.

The Brazilian, who was linked with a move to Barcelona in the January transfer window, collected possession just over the halfway line, motored forward, came inside and drilled a low effort beyond the reach of Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita from just inside the penalty area.

Richarlison was allowed plenty of time to run at centre-half Cahill, come inside onto his favoured right-foot and fire home.

The manner of the goal from a Palace perspective has been criticised by Allardyce, with the former England boss statng that Cahill should have done better with the experience he has.

Allardyce told BT Sport: "I might criticise Gary Cahill here. He could have gone tight there, he didn't. Now he is letting Richarlison run at him.

"The next mistake is letting him come inside - you must take him down the line.

"For the experience Gary Cahill has got, I am very surprised he has allowed that to happen, very, very surprised.

"He was frightened about his pace."
