Sam Allardyce makes controversial Liverpool FC and Manchester United treble winners comparison

Sam Allardyce says he can see why people have compared Liverpool to Manchester United's treble-winning team.

Liverpool ended their long wait for a Premier League title last season as they comfortably strolled to first place a year after they were crowned European champions.

Yet their title success failed to break any records and they did not win any other silverware alongside the Premier League.

In contrast, United famously won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in one season in 1999 - a feat that has never been equalled.

Despite this, Liverpool's performance led to a debate over whether they can be considered to be among the best Premier League teams of all-time.

West Brom boss Allardyce, whose side play Liverpool this afternoon, believes the comparison between the two sides is justified - although he admitted that Liverpool need to consistently win trophies in order to fully account for the argument being made.

"This Liverpool side ranks as high as you can get at the moment. Whether they're as good as United's treble team, some people will say yes," he said.

"What this side has to do is win trophies over the next couple of years. Then you'll be able to draw a more rounded conclusion.

"What's remarkable is just how well they are playing, even with their injury list.

"I don't think Jurgen has ever experienced that before. The amount and quality of players he has got on the sidelines is significant and the youngsters who have stepped in have been magnificent.

"We've got to make sure we stop them. And stop them right from the start"
