Sam Allardyce has a message for West Ham as he delivers his verdict on Diego Costa transfer talk

Former West Ham manager Sam Allardyce believes Diego Costa would be a big hit with the West Ham fans if he made the move to the London Stadium.

The former Chelsea striker has been linked with a return to the Premier League this summer, with Everton and Wolves linked as potential suitors for the 30-year-old Spaniard.

But Glen Johnson has suggested that the Hammers would be a good fit for Costa, with the former West Ham defender suggesting that the Atletico Madrid forward could thrive in east London.

“I could see it happening at West Ham. Obviously the club have shown over the years that if they want someone, they will go and get them," he told Talksport.

“They could pay Diego the wages that he would no doubt demand. And I reckon he would thrive being a big fish in a smaller pond."

Allardyce also believes that wages would not be an issue for the Hammers, who are looking for a forward to replace Marko Arnautovic after he recently left the London Stadium to join Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG.

And he said that Costa could be a success at West Ham, with the Spaniard having the ability to score goals and help the Hammers push for a European spot.

“It doesn’t matter about the salary, you pay it don’t you," he said, speaking on Talksport .

“If the fee is not huge, because he is getting on a little bit, the salary is what it is, he is a goalscorer.

“You reap the reward don’t you. If he gets West Ham into the top half of the table and pushing on that bit further and into Europe with his goals, he is definitely the sort of player who would be a massive hit with the West Ham fans."
