Sam Allardyce being backed to become next Ireland boss as odds tumble

Punters think that Big Sam could be charged with getting the Ireland team back to basics.

The pressure is mounting on Stephen Kenny as Ireland go into Thursday's World Cup qualifier against Serbia boasting just a single point after four matches in their group.

With no hope of qualifying, the FAI have got to decide if Kenny is the right man to lead their campaign for Euro 2024.

Opinion seems to be split between many Ireland fans on whether the Kenny Project is worth pursuing.

And in the meantime names are being branded about to replace the former Dundalk boss in the Ireland dugout, with some punters latching onto the idea that famed relegation-dodger Sam Allardye could be Ireland's SOS call.

Big Sam was initially chalked up at 25/1 but following a run of money, Ladbrokes were forced to cut his odds to 5/1.

The former West Brom boss is now third favourite to become the next Ireland manager, with just Neil Lennon (4/1) and Roy Keane (9/2) ahead of him.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: Manager markets can be pretty volatile but this is quite the gamble. We didn’t give Sam much of a chance when pricing it up, but punters obviously think he would be the man for the job if Stephen Kenny departs.”
