Sam Allardyce admits he has gone through “hell” at West Brom but has pledged to see the season out and then review his future.
Allardyce insists Albion will fight until the end ahead of Monday's Black Country derby at home to Wolves.
But he knows the odds are now stacked against his side who are 11 points adrift of safety with a dire goal difference.
Allardyce, 66, who joined in December with assistant Sammy Lee to replace Slaven Bilic, reflected: “The first two months are always hell but working through the hell is what it’s all about.
“Particularly Sammy and I, we have been together so long now, we know what it’s about and what we have to do.
“We try and do it the best we can.
“The sad thing is that we’re not much closer to being out of trouble. We have done all we can.
“The players' performances have consistently got better but sadly we haven’t got enough wins.”
Promoted Albion have just five games left and may have to win them all to have a chance of survival.
Allardyce added: “I’d hate to go into the last few games with our fate sealed.
“But the only way to get me out of here is to sack me.
“I will see it out to the very end no matter what.
“It would be a sad end if it comes to that - I want us to get to the last game and still have a chance.
“We have got some difficult games as everybody knows.
“But we beat Chelsea, we have drawn with Man United.
“Let’s do the double over Wolves and go and then try and beat Arsenal.”
Allardyce penned an 18-month contract at The Hawthorns with a survival bonus but there is a break clause in the event of relegation.
He assessed: “Do I stay? That is not a discussion we can have until our final fate is decided.
“Hopefully I am staying, absolutely certainly, if we can pull off this miracle and stay in the Premier League.
“Otherwise it depends on what we can come together on and what we can agree in terms of what we need to get back in the Premier League at the first time of asking.
“If that’s what the club want to do and that’s what I want to do, then there are certain criteria that we both have to meet, as there were when I joined.
“Before I said I’d come, I said: ‘I will need your help in January, gentlemen’.
“That help was very forthcoming.
“The criteria has to be met by both sides – me and the club to say ‘this is the way forward’.
“Or they might just turn around and say: ‘look, Sam, we’re going to go for somebody different, thank you very much’.
“And I’ll say: ‘That’s fine by me if that’s what you think. I apologise for not keeping you up. I’ve done all I possibly could'.
“Let’s hope we’re not talking like that but it may end up like that because we’re in a very difficult position.”
