Salomon Rondon facing nervous wait on Newcastle United future - but is on the brink of seeing price tag slashed

Salomon Rondon is now facing a nervous waiting game when it comes to his future at Newcastle United.

The South American played and scored in the final match of his loan stint in the 4-0 rout at Fulham, but he now must watch on with his future now in the hands of his West Bromwich Albion team-mates.

The Baggies face Aston Villa at the Hawthorns in the play-off semi-final and must overturn a 2-1 deficit.

With Dwight Gayle suspended after his red card at Villa Park on Saturday, West Brom are facing a tough task but if they are beaten it is better news for Newcastle as Rondon's price tag is slashed to £16.5million.

Rondon wants to stay at Newcastle and said after the game: "I'm really happy to play for Newcastle United, to be here with my teammates, with the club, so we will see what happens.

"The supporters singing my name – that was a special moment for me, because I tried to do my job, to work really hard and help the team all the time.

"I scored goals, I assisted the team, so I think I did my job. We have to wait and we will see what happens."

Rondon was also delighted to sign off for the season with a win.

He told Nufc.co.uk: "We are happy to have finished like that.

"This is the reason that you have to keep going, work hard, and finish like we finished today – that’s what we had to do.

“For me, for a striker, I’m always happy when I score, and scoring goals is the only thing in my mind.

"I’m here, I’m really happy – I scored 11 goals (in the Premier League), 12 for the season, so I’m really happy.

"I did my job, and this is the reason the gaffer brought me here – to help the team. I did, and we’ll have to wait."

Benitez will ask Newcastle to sign Rondon on a permanent basis during his talks with Mike Ashley this week.
